Hello all.
I just stumbled across this forum while searching for interactive movies (after watching Bandersnatch on Netflix).
I always wondered why I didn't see other interactive movies around. Turns out I just wasn't looking the right places. But they sure have many labels too. "Interactive Movies", "DVD Games", "Full Motion Video Games". Probably more I haven't stumbled across yet.
Bandersnatch was pretty disappointing though. Brilliant idea, but terribly executed in my opinion. I'd like to have a better experience. So my first question is:
What's a good one to check out? Preferably for DVD or Blu-ray, though I have a PS1 and PS3 too, and of course also a Win10 and Linux PC. I just feel that an "interactive movie" should run on a movie-player device, such as a DVD or Blu-ray player.
The only other interactive movie I've tried is "Who shot Johnny Rock" because I found it at a flee market once, and was curious. But I suck at it, and I also found the acting rather cheesy. Dunno if that's the general standard? If not, please advice one with great acting. I'd love something where there aren't any "wrong" choices as such, but instead just choices that has consequences - without meaning game-over and forcing you to choose "the right way" anyway.
Personally I have a big interest in Blu-ray. Have coded a little retro game as a proof of concept, just to show an example of what can be done with Blu-ray Disc Java (and disprove a lot of false claims here and there online). I've also made a bigger Blu-ray project containing 9 hours of video and 5 hours of music. I'd love to make a Blu-ray FMV game some day, but I have the same problem as everyone else: A million ideas and no time for any of them. Though I have been out filming different paths of a simple walk, with the idea of creating an interactive walk in nature, allowing the viewer to pick which way to go. Very simple stuff, just to get started. But I never got any further than that.
I saw a post here by someone else who created a FMV game. Anyone else doing any homebrew development in this area?
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions! I did a search on eBay and found a few of those. "Tender loving care" is on its way. :-) Gonna check that one out first. Looking forward to it. :-) I also bought "Late Shift" on Steam yesterday, but it didn't work with Wine. So I have to hook up the Windows PC to the TV and try again. What about those labels? Am I the only one who feels they're a bit messy?
Hadn't heard "Choose-your-own-path movie" before, but it sounds logical of course. Just a bit long. I'd like a shorter term to describe it.
I think "interactive movie" covers it pretty good. While "FMV" is too broad, covers too many variations.
But "interactive movie" seems to be used for many productions that aren't actually interactive movies, imho. I don't feel "Dragon's Lair" is an interactive movie, for example. It's a reaction game, I think. So "FMV Game" works for that one. "DVD game" too (for the DVD version of course). But not "interactive movie" - in my humble opinion. Any other labels? I thought "TellTale game" was good too, but then learned it was the name of a company. :-)

I agree. The labels are messy. "Interactive Movie" pretty much covers everything, but that term seems too vague. "Movie game" is a bit awkward. "FMV Game" is probably the worst of the bunch, but it's still a widely recognized term. Some productions are clearly movies (like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) and require "yes/no" or "left/right" decisions. We call those "choose-your-path" movies to differentiate them from games (like The Bunker, Double Switch, or Tesla Effect) that require skill.

So I've seen "Late Shift" now a few times. I feel it's better than "Bandersnatch", but would still like more freedom. Many choices aren't actually choices, but rather a loop back to the main story, meaning you don't really have a choice afterall. I get that of course. Lots of work in any choice. Some of them has to be like that. And they did a better job with "Late Shift" than in "Bandersnatch" I feel. "Tender Loving Care" arrived. Began watching it. Then 40 minutes in realized it was just the movie version. Made a refund claim on eBay, and sent it back. Of course this is resulting in all sorts of problems now, just because the eBay ad was listed wrong. Post office put on too small a postal fee on the return, so I'm gonna get an extra bill now, ultimately resulting in me paying money for nothing. Not really related of course, but I gotta rant somewhere. Found another ad with the interactive movie version which I bought. So hoping it'll be right that time. Meanwhile I also tried helloeko.com/wargames which was different, but ok'ish. I don't really get the way you make decisions. I think I prefer the way it's done in "Late Shift" and "Bandersnatch". Not saying Wargames is bad. It's rather well done. Just didn't catch my attention for some reason.

depends on what u are looking for , both tender loving care and point of view are very dry and kind of boring. fmv games had their heyday in the mid-late 90s. if you are a trekkie, wouldn't go wrong with star trek borg www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3fBdGG5cHw but sadly , no idea if it can run on modern day computer. same goes for the quantum gate saga which is pretty much an interactive movie at that time. don't think u can die in the first quantum gate and all path leads to the same ending since the ending leads to the sequel, the vortex. that one has plenty of endings and u can actually die. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMkAteFOV9g&t=93ssome of those old fmv pc games were ported to ps1 but wayyy expensive or at least last time i checked. psychic detective www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6BTtEeb7TQfoxhunt www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUUUtZ55OE0&t=701sthe x-file game - u can get mulder or scully killed www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5pU6gLmPsA&t=70snot really a full fmv game but a space combat sim but great casts and story nevertheless wing commander iv www.youtube.com/watch?v=573UAJjrY6wall are available for ps1. u can try some of the old fmv games online here like under a killing moon, the infamous night trap , phantasmogoria etc www.dosbox.online/
